PT AirWatchers worried about biomass cogeneration

Port Townsend Paper (Some rights reserved)
PT AirWatchers worried about biomass cogeneration

- Port Townsend ...

Port Townsend is being beguiled with hollow promises of “clean, green” energy at Port Townsend Paper Corp. When the biomass energy project was announced last summer by the state Department of Ecology, the public was given little time to assess a complex project that could affect our economy and our health.

The learning curve is steep, the project is being fast-tracked, and serious questions emerge as fast as details are found.

PT AirWatchers, in a five-group coalition, appealed this biomass energy project. Although demonized by biomass supporters, the effort preserves the public’s only opportunity to learn the facts. And legal discovery is revealing information unobtainable through other avenues.

For instance, Ecology admits, after issuing PTPC’s permit, to not knowing how much feedstock PTPC will use, and PTPC pins it down to “more than double” current amounts.

How can Ecology honestly evaluate emissions without knowing the fuel content?

The cogeneration expansion is nothing less than an electricity-generating utility. If pursued as such, would it be permitted in tsunami, earthquake and flood zones at the edge of protected eelgrass beds?

Consider five points relied heavily upon by project promoters: forest practices, fossil fuel reduction, jobs, local energy sufficiency, emission reductions.

Nasty Nippon of Japan is located in Port Angeles

Nasty Nippon of Japan is located in Port Angeles and has ties to General electric (the folks who made the nuclear disaster plants in Japan) Nasty Nippon is the last phone book paper mill in the US and a huge source of dioxins, if it uses salty hog fuel. Nippon is on the brink and hope to bail its self out with biomass. Lets help push them over the brink by opting out of delivery of phone books:

Want to Stop Phone Book Delivery?

"We have added many of the phone book directories to our service
and linked them to the Zip Code where they are delivered.

To opt out of phone book delivery visit:
https://www.catalogchoice.org/dashboard

enter your zip code in the search bar. The search results show
most of the phone books delivered in your area. If you don't see
the phone book listed, search for it by name. While some are
easier to contact than others, we are working to get all phone
book companies to participate and honor your delivery preferences."

Port Angeles' Nippon the last phone book paper mill in U.S.?

Nasty Nippon

Port Angeles' Nippon the last phone book paper mill in U.S.?

"Nippon Paper Industries USA's Port Angeles mill is the only manufacturer of paper used to make telephone books left in the nation after a mill in Maine closed in April, he said."

http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/article/20110606/NEWS/306069988/port-angeles-nippon-the-last-phone-book-paper-mill-in-us

Computers are eating away at the demand for paper and consumers are fed up with phone books littering their neighborhoods.  Phone books are obsolete, chopping down our forests to make phone books is over.

Paper mills in British Columbia are the number one source of dioxin releases.  Burning salty bark and scraps created dioxins.  Let Canada have the pollution, but Canada is starting to crack down on this problem too.

If Nippon shuts down life in Port Angeles will be a whole lot better.
