Walk out planned for The Evergreen State College Tomorrow
I'm not sure what this will accomplish as all classes get out at 1pm on Wednesdays, so no one would actually have to "walk out" at that time. But here it is anyway:
----
From the campus listserve:
The Evergreen State College has a long history of taking the side of rapists on campus and blaming victims.
In light of the Evergreen Administration's recent failures at holding perpetrators of rape and sexual violence accountable, and the actions they have taken to prevent students from keeping spaces safe from sexual violence, JOIN US for a walk out, rally and speak up to protest rape culture and rape apologists!
Evergreen's "grievance process" is set-up to support and protect rapists, while demanding the survivors "prove" their experience. Again and again we have seen Evergreen decide that "no instance of sexual violence occurred", leaving survivors silenced, targeted and demeaned. NOT SUPPORTING AND PROTECTING SURVIVORS IS VIOLENCE.
RAPE IS VIOLENCE. Supporting rapists is violence. Protecting rapists is violence.
I don't feel safe on a campus that turns a blind eye to sexual violence. I don't feel safe on a campus where I'm told my body can be used and abused and no one will be held accountable. DO YOU FEEL SAFE?
Show your support on Wednesday. Tell Evergreen: We do NOT support rapists. We do NOT support the intentional targeting of those who support and speak out for/with survivors. Evergreen's complicity in rape culture IS VIOLENCE.
We demand an end to this violence.

Is this the fastest turn over yet for this property or is it all just an illusion? It sure looks like business as usual in this place; I mean, other than the "closed" signs.. Oh wait, "closed" signs are the norm for this property. You decide what is going on here. I wonder how long the lease is?

Where are we going to work when the trees are gone?
WHERE ARE WE GOING TO WORK WHEN THE TREES ARE GONE?
Where are we going to work when the trees are gone?
Darryl Cherney
I come from a long long line of tree cutting men,
And this company town was here before my grandaddy settled in.
We left enough trees astanding so our kids could toe the line,
Then the big corporation come and cut 'em down,
Got us working overtime.
Where are we going to work when the trees are gone?
Will the big boss have us wash his car, or maybe mow his lawn?
I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a lumberjack man, but I fear it ain't for long?
Tell me, where are we going to work when the trees are gone?
These corporate mergers make no sense to me.
They got them a great big debt to pay, so we're clearcutting all the trees.
That old fishin' hole where I used to take my kids,
We trashed it out last Monday morning, good lord,
Look at what we did.
Where are we going to work when the trees are gone?
Will the big boss have us wash his car, or maybe mow his lawn?
I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a lumberjack man, but I fear it ain't for long?
Tell me, where are we going to work when the trees are gone?
These Wall Street money men they make me mad,
I got a family to feed, and falling trees is the only work I've ever had.
You know now folks we can't just stand here while this cut and run goes on,
We got to stop them big corporations, before the trees are gone.

This walk is, for some, about reclaiming the word slut to use it in an empowering respectful way. It's about coming together and saying, we will not let you blame the victims anymore

The wind is blowing all the toxins from the Simpson property West and into town today. It smells very bad.
I'm staying inside as much as possible. When I open my door to go outside the smell is so strong that I know to go back inside. Maybe I'll put my respirator on and go take some pictures later, or maybe I'll go spend the day in Tacoma. What shame that so many children in Shelton have to breath air like this during their recess.

BHR does not serve our community
Mason County does not have any form of community mental health care. Many people may be surprised to learn this, because they know that Behavioral Health Resources (BHR) has a location near the Shelton welfare office. The sad truth is that BHR only takes DSHS (welfare) insurance and does not have a sliding fee scale for folks who do not qualify for welfare.
This means that folks who live in Mason County, need help and are not on welfare will go untreated, unless they can find a way to get to Olympia or Bremerton. Mason County and Shelton are sadly under-served. Someone could have the best health insurance in the world, but it would not do them any good in Mason County. There is not a single psychiatrist in Mason County who will take clients who are not on welfare. Seniors citizens, legal resident aliens and disabled workers who are on Medicare, have to go to Olympia or Bremerton or go without.
__
This is straight from the BHR website:
“Who can be served?
Due to recent state budget cuts in funding we are unable to provide ongoing services to individuals without Medicaid. Exception: Those who do not have Medicaid and have been released from jail or psychiatric hospitalization within the last 30 days may receive limited service IF they have a history of being on Medicaid.”
__
I don’t know what “recent state budget cuts” they are referring to, as this has been their policy since at least 2005. Yet every year BHR holds fundraisers and asks for donations. I say, don’t give them a penny. They don’t have a sliding fee scale and they will not treat anyone who is not insured by DSHS. BHR is an out of town business, it is not a charity, so why should we give BHR any charity?
As a side note, BHR in Olympia did not honor their obligation to count the homeless for the 2010 census and as a result homeless people in Olympia went uncounted and will probably be under-served until the next census. BHR said it would count the homeless in Olympia for the 2010 census, but BHR did not do it and BHR did not let anyone know that they did not do it until it was too late. There was no time for any another agency step in and do it. BHR is pathetic; a real community mental health care system is needed in Shelton. It’s time for BHR to take all forms of insurance and offer a sliding fee scale or get the hell out of town. As it is the presence of BHR gives the illusion that we have a community mental health center in Mason County, when in fact we have nothing but a company that mooches off the state.
What happened to the meager tax funds that the county collected to pay for mental health care? None of it was spent on mental health care and the money was put into the general fund. It is clear that mental health services are needed in Shelton and it is inhumane for the funds to put into the general pool (or be given to BHR) while the most vulnerable people in our community, who often cannot advocate for themselves, continue to suffer. How much suffering could be prevented if we had a true community mental health care center in Shelton?

TGIF!
It's been one of those weeks....
Waaaaaay back when I was a container hauler in the Port of Tacoma they played this song on KMPS every Friday at precisely 5:00pm. (maybe they still do?) Much to the chagrin of the dispatcher, one of my co-workers ALWAYS opened up his company radio microphone, held it to the music station and played this over the company's official dispatch channel. I don't think our Romanian-born dispatcher ever did figure out what it was about, he NEVER let us off work before 5:30 on a Friday and he barely understood English. But at least my co-worker never got in trouble for his weekly stunt. Good memories..

John Trudell Song of the Last Ten Years
Cry Your Tears For You
John Trudell
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
After we've already bled for you
Already been dead to you
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
Chapters of a democracy story
Descendants of genocide
Twelve score and more years ago
We went from being the majority
To being the smallest minority
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
We saw that emptying
Early morning skyline
Back through that horizon
Duck Valley 1979, Wounded knee
Sand creek, that Trail of Tears
Exactly how did our land
Become your country
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
While we're still crying tears of our own
With your past as your future
That industrial ruling class
Using religion as a weapon
Distilling love into hate
Pointing fingers and name calling evil
Sacrificing lives and blood
Making the innocent the new virgins
Offerings to the gods of profit
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
In the homeland security
Pretending corporate corruption
Isn't economic terrorism
Money talks while the government listens
Compiling files on ones who think different
Conditioning an acceptance of debt
And not to expect the truth
So get used to hearing the lie
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
Misusing the beauty
Turning freedom into a killing machine
Mass murdering the environment
Weaponzing the psychology of fear
And pushing material addiction with
A substitution of rules faking the law
The bill of rights becomes collateral damage
Making the constitution another broken treaty
Now you want us
To cry your tears for you
Way this story is unfolding
We may end up crying together
As in crying at the same time
But we're short on tears to cry for you
With all these tears to cry of our own
Now you want us to cry your tears for you.
Duckabush on Fire
Recent pictures from Bremerton show the flames, this means the fire is now crowning in the trees. There is some speculation that the fire has jumped over Jupiter Ridge and is heading down to the Dosewallips. If so it might stop there because that area has recently burned and there is not much fuel left.
